Caravanners 'waste two weeks in traffic'

RSS feed icon Article Published On 4 June 2007

UK caravanners have to spend up to two weeks of the year stuck in traffic jams, new figures suggest.

According to Zurich, 76 per cent of motorists - including many caravan drivers - said that they had been caught in a traffic jam the first of May's two bank holidays.

More than one in ten (11 per cent) caravanners said they had been stuck for more than six hours in a jam.

These delays have forced caravan owners to break the law, with 31 per cent admitting to have used their mobile phone while stuck in traffic and 17 per cent getting out of their caravan to stretch their legs.

"Despite our love affair with the car, traffic jams are a fact of life," explained Roy Seeds, head of motor underwriting at Zurich Insurance.

"It's always best to check the travel news before setting out, but if you do get caught up in traffic, don't get frustrated with them, find a way to remain calm and alert."

Richard Burgess, director of Cover 4 Caravans, added: "Caravanners are a creative lot with singing and daydreaming being named as top ways to beat the boredom.

"However, I would advise caravanners not to become complacent in bad traffic due to the number of irresponsible motorists on the roads."ADNFCR-1087-ID-18168429-ADNFCR
