Figures gathered by the Camping and Caravanning Club and Halfords show that caravan and camping holidays now account for around 12 per cent of all holidays taken and help create and support many rural jobs and communities.
The website travelconnect.co.uk reports that the research also revealed that caravan and motorhome users typically spend £28.80 a day while on holiday - boosting local economies significantly.
Caravanners were particularly likely to spend money in pubs (60 per cent), local restaurants (48 per cent) and visiting tourist attractions (68 per cent).
"Over 17 million camping or caravanning holidays are taken each year," explained the chairman of the Camping and Caravanning Club, Nev Ramsbottom.
"[They] contributes to a significant spend in the nation's economy which, in turn, positively impacts rural jobs.
"Much of this is fuelled by people's desire to visit and explore new places and sample local food; camping gives you the freedom to do this economically and at a moment's notice."
Recently, the presenter of a caravanning TV programme reported that caravanning was one of the greenest ways someone can holiday.
