Public consolation over travellers' caravan sites launched

After research from Department for Communities and Local Government and East of England Regional Assembly (EERA) found that the area could require 1,200 additional caravan pitches by 2011, the EERA launched a consultation about where they should be located.
It is hoped that more organised caravan sites would cut down on the instances of illegal caravan parking.
"Increasing the availability of legal caravan pitches will provide suitable places for gypsies and travellers to live and help tackle the problem of unauthorised sites, now and in years to come," explained councillor John Reynolds, chair of EERA's regional planning panel.
"This public consultation is a real chance for everyone in the settled and travelling communities in the east of England to learn more about the options on the table and to have their say on the number and distribution of these additional pitches."
Government estimates suggest that there are around 15,500 gypsy and traveller caravans in England. Approximately 79 per cent of these people live on authorised caravan sites.
