Lancashire police enlist community to crack caravan crime

Local law enforcement officers have launched the Caravan Watch Scheme, which aims to provide a simple, yet effective, method of sharing information about suspicious activity in any of the area's ten caravan sites.
"Each site has a volunteer who will act as the point of contact for that site. Each volunteer has a 'Cascade List' with the names and telephone numbers for the points of contact in every site," explained PC Sharon Lyons.
"If something happens or there is someone acting suspiciously, details should be noted, such as a car registration number, or details about a person, such as their clothing [and] height."
Once the information is gathered, it is quickly relayed to the police and other caravan site owners, which means that "within minutes every resident on all of the ten sites should be aware of the alleged suspicious activity".
PC Lyons also urged caravan owners themselves to take basic security precautions to stop them becoming the victims of crime.
"I would ask people to remember that the same crime prevention advice applies to caravans," she added.
"It's always better to prevent crime from happening in the first place."
Government figures suggest that there were over 1.7 million vehicle thefts in the UK in the 2005/06 period.
