Dispute over West Country caravan park

A dispute over a proposed West Country caravan park has prompted a number of residents to create their own online petition against the project.

The application by a former car dealer, Michael Pearce, to turn a plot of land near Cheddar in Somerset into a new caravan park has already received backing from the local parish council.

However, neighbouring Dreycott parish council recently strenuously objected to the proposed development, which is due to be constructed on a site near Nylands Crossroads, as they feel it will destroy the countryside.

Now, the BBC reports that a group of local residents have got involved, setting up a website and inviting people to sign their online petition against the new caravan site.

"Cheddar Parish Council gave its support to the application, ignoring the views of the majority of its parishioners and electorate," said a spokesperson for the residents.

However, caravan enthusiasts have countered, claiming the modern sites do not damage the environment and that the site could bring the area increased tourist revenue.

"For the most part caravanning is an environmentally friendly hobby," Richard Burgess, of Cover4Caravans, explained.

"Modern caravan park developments are very much aware of the impact they have on the countryside and endeavour to minimise damage and disruption as much as possible. In areas such as Somerset, the natural charms of the surrounding area play a big part in attracting visitors so it's important that these are retained."
