Caravan market grows

The caravan market in the UK has enjoyed a year of considerable growth, according to recently released figures.

A report by EurotaxGlass's has found that new sales in July and August were up by 5.7 per cent on the same period in 2005 to 6,771 units.

It is thought that the good weather of the early summer was largely responsible for the impressive showing, which was matched in the used caravans market.

Manufacturers have also been predicting strong new caravan sales in the final months of the year although they are less enthusiastic about the used market, claims the report.

However, retailers have been warned that an influx of new, budget priced caravans could unsettle the market and EurotaxGlass's has advised retailers to make a concerted effort to make clear price differentiations between the new, moderately priced models and the more traditional vehicles.

Randal Thomas, editor of the firm's Guide to Caravan Values, commented: "Manufacturers and retailers must undergo a period of re-adjustment to take into account future pricing structures, margins, and consequent market alignment which will determine future values over the next few months."

The Christmas and new year period is a popular time with caravanners, as many visit relatives or take short breaks in their home on wheels.
