The caravan was placed in the top 20 of all time motoring ideas, putting it alongside such items as self-cancelling indicators, the Mini and cat's eyes, reports the Scotsman.
Readers of Auto Express magazine voted on a short list compiled by the publication's editorial staff, with pneumatic rubber tyres coming out in pole position.
Fiona Bewers, spokeswoman for the Caravan Club, told the Scotsman: "We are, naturally, delighted that the caravan has now been officially recognised as a top motoring invention."
She added that the club's one million members across the UK "know that caravanning is the perfect way to explore our beautiful countryside, enjoy a whole range of outdoor pursuits and allow you to have the freedom to go where the mood takes you."
Items such as traffic lights, speed limits and pedestrian crossings were among the ideas deemed least popular by drivers.
There are thought to be around 500,000 operational caravans in the UK.
