Having got your new motorhome no doubt one of your next steps is to plan your first motorhome holiday in it. Chances are you'll be thinking of taking your motorhome some distance, maybe to some of the islands around the UK or across into mainland Europe. As soon as you need to cross water though of course you need to consider ferry companies, understand ferry crossing routes, whether they have any restrictions on carrying motorhomes, ferry timetables and of course the price of ferries.
First step is to decide your intended motorhome holiday route. If you're going to keep your travel to around the UK then consider UK Ferry companies. If you are looking to travel across to mainlaind Europe, don't just think of a dover to calais ferry, there are lots of ferry companies which operate different ferry routes from the UK to different parts of France. There are also other options to such as Spain, Denmark and Sweden as well.
Ferry prices can be a significant part of your holiday costs. You can get online price quotes from most of the ferry companies now so where there is more than one company operating the route you need to take it may pay to get multiple quotes to compare the ferry prices.
To take advantage of cheap ferry fares, book your crossing at a quieter time and as soon as possible. Usually each crossing will only have limited space for larger vehicles such as motorhomes so by booking early you make sure you get the crossing you want. There is of course the chance that a ferry company may offer last minute discounts for ferry crossings not filled, but the risk is you wait for these and then find there isn't any room for you!
As well as ferries there is now of course the Eurotunnel or channel tunnel which offers a good, fast alternative if you are looking to travel with your motorhome from the UK to Calais in France.
