Buying a static caravan can be very costly, whether you buy a secondhand caravan or a new one. Not only are there the costs of the purchase but also the associated costs for the site you have on the caravan park, rent and utilities costs.
One way of recovering at least some of your costs is by subletting or renting out your static caravan for some weeks during the year. Obviously this is only possible if you know there are some periods when you will not be holidaying in it yourself. This could be a particularly good idea if you are able to offer your static caravan for rent during any of the school holidays as not only are you more likely to get it occupied but also you will be able to charge a good rate.
Not all park owners will allow you to rent out your caravan so if you are thinking of renting it out then you need to check that the caravan park accepts this before you purchase a caravan on the site.
Having established that your caravan can be rented out, many park owners provide a service whereby they will undertake the caravan rental activity for you, including the advertising and administrative tasks. They will also arrange such as cleaning of your caravan. Remember though that whilst this may seem attractive, the park owner will charge a fee for the rental service so you need to make sure you understand what this is and how this compares with the caravan rental income you are expecting.
There are now some websites emerging which offer private rental static caravans. You may decide to use one of these but be careful to make sure that you are happy with the company operating the website and that they do get a good volume of visitors to it. Remember that they won't usually provide any support other than simply advertising your static caravan for rent.
Another option is to undertake the rental activity yourself, perhaps advertising on the park itself, maybe within local papers or noticeboards at the local church etc. Whilst this may be cheaper, consider the overall effort you will need to put in to support the renting, administering the payments etc and also ensuring the caravan is clean and ready for each new set of holiday visitors.
All in all, renting your static caravan can be of great value but make sure you carefully consider all the requirements and then take the best route for you.
