Help with the Caravan Jargon

As is often the case as you enter a new subject matter, caravan jargon can seem daunting at first. The following caravan info though will hopefully help you with some of the terminology used.

ABS - Stands for Acrylonitirile-Butadiene-Styrene, the plastic used to make the caravan panels.

Actual Laden Weight - Total weight of a caravan being towed, including caravan itself and contents. This is connected to the Maximum Authorised Weight or Maximum Technically Permissible Laden Mass (MTPLM) in that the Actual weight must not exceed the permissible weight.

Awning Length - The awning is fabric over a framework which can be attached to the side of a caravan to increase the available living space. The Awning Length is the length of the roof and sides of the caravan combined. This is the critical measurement used to determine the awning size required.

Berth - a bed or bunk. Terminology is for example 4-berth, meaning there is sleeping space for 4 people.

Blown Air Heating - Ducting inside newer caravans allows a fan to circulate warm air throughout the caravan.

Breakaway Cable - a legal requirement on modern trailers. It is a steel cable which links the caravan handbrake to the tow ball. If the caravan separates from the car this cable sets the caravan handbrake stopping the caravan.

Cassette Blind - A roller blind, part of the window setting.

Cassette Toilet - chemical toilet with the tank stored outside the caravan for easier emptying.

Chemical Toilet - a self-contained toilet. The waste is held in a sealed container to which chemicals are added to break down the waste and ensure no leakage of odours. The container needs periodic emptying.

CRIS - Caravan Registration and Identification Scheme, caravan registration as per the DVLA for cars.

Hook-up - a pitch which has connection to mains electricity available for the caravan

Full Service Pitch - Pitch with a variety of facilities including fresh water and waste water disposal, electricity and TV aerial.

Jockey Wheel - the small wheel at the front of the caravan which is used to both support the caravan and help manoeuvre it.

Leisure Battery - 12V battery which powers the caravan accessories.

Maximum Authorised Weight - Also known as the Maximum Technically Permissible Laden Mass (MTPLM) and this is the maximum weight of the caravan when fully laden.

Motor Mover - an electric motor that helps manoeuvre a caravan, saves doing it manually.

Outfit - the caravan and towing vehicle combined.

User Payload - the weight of personal items that can be stored in a caravan.
