Buying A Used Motor Home

Buying a used motor home or a secondhand motorhome is not unlike buying any other motorised vehicle in that you need to thoroughly inspect any prospective purchase before you sign on the dotted line. Obviously buying a motor home is some what more daunting than buying a car or motor bike simply because there is more of it to inspect and considerably more components and parts to go wrong. There is of course also the question of a significant price tag.

First things first; you will need to set your self a reasonable budget. There are a lot of extremely desirable motor homes out there with some what extremely undesirable prices. But if you set your self a budget and have a good idea of what you require from your motor home in terms of size and space then you should be able to find something to suit you with out sacrificing too much in the way of quality.

Deciding what type of motor home isn't always easy as there are many different models available on the UK market. The key is to draw up a list of your basic requirements; perhaps start with: how many people are going to regularly be staying in the van? For instance there Is little practical sense in buying a Winnebago when its only you and your partner staying no more than one night at a time no more than twenty miles from your home. On the other hand if you buy a small low profile wagon for you and your partner and you wish to take your grandchildren away with you a few times a year you could always expand your dwelling space by using an awning or outside tent.

So once you have drawn up your budget and decided on your needs it is time to start the some what rewarding experience of shopping. You could start in your local paper or go straight to a main motorhome dealer the choice is yours but either way I expect you are going to want one or both of two things: A motor home that is in good condition and or a price that is going to leave your bank balance in good condition.

Base model and engine choice are fundamental factors when choosing a motor home that suits you and your budget. If you do want to look after the pennies choosing a motor home with a less desirable base model could save you some money, some models are just as reliable as the more popular models but for some reason or another they have just not taken to the market. Finding these gems could save you dearly.

Whatever model you choose, as a used Motorhome, however good it looks, you may like to make sure that it is in sound condition and that the wheels aren't going to come off when you drive off the forecourt. You could have an RAC or AA qualified inspection done, this may cost you but it could save effort and could prove some what useful in identifying unseen mechanical or structural misdemeanours. Below is a brief checklist of things to look out for whilst carrying out an inspection when buying a used motorhome purchase.

  • Check the wheels and underneath the chassis for rust and anything hanging down.
  • Obviously check the engine is mechanically sound. Listen to it running to hear for anything that is a miss.
  • Check windows for leaks or cracks
  • Check for damp in the walls, floor and ceiling and walk around on the floor to check for any signs of delimitation.
  • Check the roof for any signs of holes or dodgy repair jobs, if something has been repair this could once again rear its ugly head later in the form of a hefty repair job.
  • Most importantly check the log books and registration documents you may also want to run a Hpi check on the vehicle to check it hasn't had any serious accident damage or in a worst case scenario that it has been stolen.
